Elanden spotten in Zweden
Elk in Sweden and Finland
HOLMSTOCK TRAVEL loves moose.
We have listed some information and advice here.
If you love Scandinavia, there is no way you can avoid the elk(s). Almost everyone is crazy about these brown giants. Spotting moose, photographing moose, hunting and eating moose, drawing moose, painting, shops full of merchandise, moose in traffic and well...
where actually not. Even in Stockholm city they walk around every now and then.
We often spontaneously act as a lookout or keep a super sharp eye on things. It remains a kind of sport and hobby. The highlight for us was an entire moose family, somewhere in Norbotten, in the Swedish north. A magical moment that will remain in your memory.

Safe meeting
..along the E4 between Luleå and Piteå
The E4 there is more of a 'route national' than a highway and we had the chance to stop for a while.
This beautiful moose family walked through about 75cm of snow there. Not the prettiest photo, but a wonderfully fun moment. Traffic safe thanks to the fence.

Extremely dangerous!!
4,500 - 6,000 traffic accidents
per year in Sweden alone. We were very lucky here. These two wanted to cross but luckily we were warned by a truck driver driving in front of us. The berm here is 1.5 meters deep.
Elk..and the traffic
According to estimates and data from Swedish authorities, more than 8,000 kilometers of fencing has been installed along roads in Sweden to prevent collisions with moose and other big game. These fencing are mainly concentrated along highways and other major traffic arteries where the risk of collisions is greatest.
In addition to fencing, other measures are also taken to increase safety, such as:
- Warning Signs : Installing signs that warn motorists of crossing wildlife, especially in areas where moose are known to occur.
- Wildlife overpasses and tunnels : Construction of special wildlife crossings, such as overpasses and tunnels, to allow moose and other animals to cross safely without disrupting traffic.
- Use of reflectors and odor barriers : Placing reflectors along the roads that reflect the light of headlights to deter animals. Odor barriers are sometimes used to keep animals away from roads.
- Education and Awareness : Campaigns to make motorists aware of the dangers of moose collisions and the importance of driving carefully, especially at dusk and night.
These combined efforts will help reduce moose collisions and protect both human and animal life. Despite these measures, road accidents involving moose remain a challenge in Sweden, especially in autumn and winter when moose are more active and move closer to roads in search of food.
Watch your pace
and ALWAYS be alert.
Not just where there are signs. Moose often come out of nowhere, exactly where you least expect them.
Moose in balance
Elk hunting
It is estimated that between 300,000 and 400,000 moose live in Sweden. This number varies somewhat depending on the season, as the population is affected annually by hunting and natural factors such as food availability and predation.
As for hunting, a significant number of elk are shot each year during the hunting season, which usually takes place in the fall. Approximately 80,000 to 100,000 elk are shot by hunters each year. Hunting is strictly regulated by the Swedish government to keep the population in balance and ensure that there is no overpopulation or underpopulation, which could be harmful to both the moose and their habitat.

Elk meat - delicious game
Elk hunting
Elk meat is a popular and valuable product in Sweden, with a strong tradition of hunting and game consumption. Approximately 80,000 to 100,000 elk are shot annually during the hunting season. The annual meat yield is estimated at 25 million kilograms of moose meat .
Holmstock Travel has excellent sources of good meat in southern and northern Sweden.
We prefer to prepare elk in the Dutch oven . Outside on an open fire. This benefits both the taste and the experience. The Allemansrätten makes it possible to cook outside almost anywhere!
