Travel with a passport or identity card
Are you planning a holiday soon and wondering: "Can I cross the border with just an ID card?" The short answer is: yes, but not everywhere. Whether you need a passport or if an ID card suffices depends entirely on your destination.
Within most European countries (EU and Schengen countries), a valid European identity document is sufficient to cross the border. However, if you're venturing outside of Europe, a passport – and sometimes even a visa – is mandatory.
On this page, we'll explain exactly where you can go with your ID card and when it's wise (or necessary) to pack your passport. This way, you'll be well-prepared and stress-free for your trip.

Traveling to Sweden, Norway or Finland with an ID card,
.. is that allowed?
.. is that allowed?
Yes, you can travel to Sweden, Norway, and Finland without any problems using a Dutch or Belgian identity card. Although Norway is not a member of the European Union, it is part of the Schengen Area. This means you do not need to show a passport at the border; your official ID card is sufficient proof.
Whether you're exploring nature in the Norwegian fjords, going on a city trip in Stockholm, or chasing the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland: your identity document is your ticket. Please note that your identity card must still be valid on the day you travel back home.
Please note for flights and extra checks:
Although an ID card is legally sufficient, airlines always ask for a valid travel document at the gate. So make sure your card is not damaged and that the chip is clearly readable. Are you traveling via a country outside the Schengen Area (such as a stopover in London)? Then you will still need a passport!

Do children need their own ID?
Yes, since 2012 it is mandatory for every child, from baby to teenager, to have their own valid travel document. It is no longer possible to register children in their parents' passports. Are you traveling across the border with your children? Then make sure they have their own ID card or passport with them.
Traveling with one parent or a different surname:
Are you traveling alone with your child and do you have a different surname? Then additional questions may be asked at border control to prevent child abduction. In that case, we recommend bringing the following documents:
- A copy of the passport of the non-traveling parent.
- A completed form 'Consent for travel with a minor'.
- A recent extract from the authority register.
Consent for travel with a minor
This is the page where parents can directly download the official form (as a PDF) to prove consent to the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.

Extract from the authority register:
This extract proves who has parental authority over the child. This is not provided by the municipality, but by the Judiciary. The link below leads to the central page where this can be requested (often free of charge).

Tip: Apply for your child's own ID card at the municipality in good time, especially during busy holiday periods, waiting times can be several weeks.
